Further details

A MARBLE FIGURE OF A RECLINING WOMAN OR VENUS, GERHARD GEORGE WESSEL (1744–1811)

Westphalian-born sculptor Gerhard George Wessel trained in Berlin before joining the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1773 under the patronage of King George III. He quickly set himself apart, winning a silver medal in 1776 and exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1781 to 1787. Returning to Osnabrück, then under British control, he became the city’s principal sculptor, collaborating closely with the architect Hollenberg. Until his death in 1811, he produced a prolific body of work, including busts, wax portraits, religious sculptures, and architectural decorations. Despite this documented activity, few of his works are currently located or catalogued.
