Hardwood table with two back-Sponki (a lost). Egg tempera on chalk ground. 51,2 x 43 cm. At the bottom signed and dated 'year 7195 painted it, this 'Not created by Hand face' of the icon painter Wasily Kozmin'. In front of a dunkem the Background, the face of Christ appears on a white, undecorated cloth, which is knotted at the top corners. The serious gaze of Christ is directed to the viewer. The inscription at the upper edge is 'Christ, our God, everyone hopes to have You, that he will not be disappointed'. Vasiliy Kozmin (1670-1689) is one of the most important icon-painters of the 17. Century. His Oeuvre is attested in numerous documents. In the year 1670, he was ordered from Kostroma to Moscow, in order to create icons for the Church of the 'Spas Nerukotwornij'. For the year 1671 is documented that he was in Rostov in the Uspensky Sobor, where he executed wall paintings and icons. For the same year is evidence that he Works for the Tsar created and together with Gury Nikitin multiple icons for the Tsar's Palace was finished with them. In 1673, he was appointed again with other icon-painters from Kostroma to Moscow to work in the Armoury of the Moscow Kremlin. In addition, he was involved in the decoration of a book for the Tsarevich Petr fifth Alexeevich, as well as the painting of the Church "Spas Nerukotwornij" (not man-made face of Christ). The superior quality of his Work has been honored with an award by the Tsar in the year 1676, the freed him from many taxes. In July 1679, he painted icons for the Church of the Pokrov in Izmailowo and in the following year, he was involved in the decoration of the Church of the prophet Elias in Yaroslavl. In 1684, he worked together with Gury Nikitin in the painting of the Church of the Holy Trinity of the Ipatiev monastery in Kostroma, and initiated, together with Vasily Osipov, the Work on the Nowospasskij monastery in Moscow. After the death of Gury Nikitin, he was together with Vasily Osipov, head of the icon-painters Guild in Kostroma.
