Watercolor, 32 x 50,5 cm, on the bottom left of the monogram I. H., right at the bottom of other Hand 1914 dated, unframed. - As a bonus: a charcoal sketch with Portrait of a lady, 47 x 38 cm, signed lower right & dated Ivo Hauptmann 1967, unframed.

Landscape, still-life and figure painter, son of the Nobel prize-winner Hauptmann, Gerhart. H. began his studies in 1903 at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he attended the Studio of Maillol, Bonnard, Denis & Vuillard. He continued his education at the art school of Lewin-Funcke in Berlin, his teacher there, L. Corinth. 1904-08 a course of study followed at the Weimar Academy under H. Olde, as well as a master's student of L. von Hofmann. There he made friendship with H. Arp, H. van de Velde & E. Munch, O. Mueller, he was familiar with from a Dresden. 1909-12 he was again in Paris and became friends with P. Signac, with whom he exhibited in 1911, also at the Salon des Indépendants. H. lived in a row alternately in Hamburg, Dresden and Berlin, where he was one of the founding members of the Free secession. After he had settled permanently in Hamburg, he joined in 1927, also of the local secession. After the Second world war. h. lecturer at the state art school in Hamburg was, in addition, up to 1965, Vice-President of the Free Academy of the arts. He was honored in 1961 with the Federal cross of merit, & in 1964 with the Edwin-Scharff-Preis, city of Hamburg awarded him in 1973 also, the title of Professor. H. was one of the main masters of the avant-garde in Germany, the it as few others have managed to set the lightness of light & color in the landscape into the picture.
