The feast of Herod, L. u. signed and 1812 dated. Oil on canvas. 47 x 58 cm. Doubled. Restored. Frame. The presentation refers to the New Testament, Matthew 14, 1-12 and mark 6, 17-29 John the Baptist, made to the king Herod's allegations because of his cohabitation with Herodias, his brother's wife, and was subsequently caught. At a feast the king of the dance of Salome, daughter of Herodias' so impressed was that he was the fulfillment of every wish swore. As Salome the head of John the Baptist demanded, startled Herod, but he dared not to make false promises. He sent the executioner to the prison, Salome soon handed over to the head of the Baptist on a plate. Provenance: Southern German Private Collection.
