Lot 118DESFOSSE & KARTH (MANUFACTORY), AT THE END OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY.
Series of six strips of grisailles from the Story of Psyche representative :

- Psyche's Parents consulting the oracle of Apollo (two strips)

- Psyche abandoned (ea)

- Psyche wanting to stab the Love asleep (two strips)

Each individual : H. 2,84 cm. L. of 0.56 cm.

The original series of this famous wall paper was edited by the manufacture of Dufour

1814, representing twelve paintings of the story of Psyche.

It traces the history of the most beautiful of the three daughters of a king, Psyche, whose beauty was

so rare, that the men were a cult after seeing it, forgetting about their devotion to

Venus.

This scenic area was carried out on a composition of Louis Laffite (1770-1828),

who was himself inspired by François Gérard, and Pierre-Paul Prudhon, two famous

painters of the neoclassical period. It is therefore not surprising the style of these panels,

where appears including antique furniture inspired by Jacob.

The originality of this series comes from its composition in twelve panels, constituting

a cycle where each stage can be associated or dissociated. Its success then led

several new editions of this wallpaper, the end of the Nineteenth and the early Twentieth century

by the manufacture Desfossé and Karth.
