JEAN-HONORÉ FRAGONARD (1732-1806), LOVE AS FOLLY; LOVE THE SENTINEL, OIL ON CANVAS, OVAL, A PAIR, IN 18th CENTURY CARVED GILTWOOD FRAMES
A key figure in 18th century French painting, Fragonard (1732–1806) left his mark by applying himself with equal brilliance to many different, sometimes almost opposing genres. A painter of French genre scenes, but also inspired by the Northern masters, he produced, among other things, lively portraits known as “fantasy figures”, luminous landscapes, mythological and oriental scenes, ethereal allegories and a small number of large-scale compositions, such as La Fête à Saint-Cloud (Banque de France, Paris) and La Fête à Rambouillet (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, inv. 436).
A significant part of his painting was devoted to the type of allegorical painting featuring putti that we find in this charming pair. This aspect of his work was extremely popular during his lifetime and continued to inspire others long after his death. We can site for instance the putti punctuating the allegories of night painted by Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) in the 1890s (La Nuit, Musée d'Orsay, Paris, inv. RF 1086) as an example of this enduring influence. These blond cherubs with their gleaming curls appear quite early in Fragonard's career. Often used in allegorical compositions for decorative schemes, they can be seen as early as 1758-1760. An early example is the Allegory of War, represented by cherubs perched on an ancient chariot, the sketch of which was once in the collection of the painter Natoire (1700–1777) (see J.-P. Cuzin, Fragonard, Life and Work, Fribourg, 1988, no. 64).
Our two Cupids, embodying the traditional sentimental dilemma between cautious love and passionate love, are known in different versions. One pair, executed circa 1772 and formerly in the collection of Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905), is now in the National Gallery in Washington (inv. 1970.17.111 and 1970.17.112 - see J.-P. Cuzin, 1988, op. cit., nos. 256 and 257). Another version of Amour Folie in a rectangular format was formerly in the collection of Eudoxe Marcille (1814-1890). The Frick Collection in New York also has a tall format version featuring the motif of Amour Folie waving his torch aloft. Painted in the 1790s, this work demonstrates the continued success of this pleasing composition (inv. 1915.1.53 - see J.-P. Cuzin, 1988, op. cit., no. 395).
