LARGE SCULPTURE OF A OFFICIAL DEITY OF THE FORMER MUSEUM COLLECTION
Lößmasse, Painting, Gilding
China
late Ming to early Qing. 17. Century.
HEIGHT 71 CM
This seated sculpture comes from the well-known Exner collection, and was once found in the East Asia Museum of Frankenau (Germany). It represents an official deity from the Daoist Trinity of Sankuan, the "three officials", the divine rank. The figure in Chinese clothing of a high official has a corresponding cap to the head and kept in the hands of a Gui, a scepter. The gilded face is very expressive with the eyes (glass) and speaking an open mouth. Good plastic shaped folds in the floor-length robe with very wide Ends of the Sleeves. This heavy sculpture is shaped from a mass of Lößerde and in paint technology, revised and partly gilded. Remnants indicate that once the larger parts have been gold plated, as today. Distinct age characteristics of old repairs.
