Japan. Edo Period. 18./19. Century

Ink, opaque white and Red on paper. On a thin cardboard laminated on a frame. Behind glass with passe-partout framed. The two severed heads are depicted realistically. The blackened teeth of the woman on the left and the white of the man on the right, to allow the identification of sex, as well as the design of the hair. These are intertwined and connect the lovers, even after her death.

The double suicide of a dear couple who sees no other way out, in Japan is considered highly romantic. Known the theme of the Bunraku play 'Sonezaki Shinjû', first performed in 1703, he is very Monzaemon.

Due to the Format, it could be a section of a transverse role in the theme of the severed heads (jap. namakubi) was treated.
