Axel Einar Hjorth was a Swedish architect and designer who created furniture using wood such as oak, rosewood, and birch. It was his application of Art Deco and Modernist aesthetics that make his work an early model of contemporary Swedish design, with its emphasis on minimalism and functionality. Hjorth’s designs are reminiscent of Gerrit Rietveld, a member of the De Stijl movement, whose work was similarly inspired by modernism, with an emphasis on form, simplicity, and function. During his career, Hjorth worked for several furniture companies including Nordiska Kompanient. His works are in the collection of the National Museum in Stockholm.
