Julius Anton Adam was a German genre painter and animalist who specialised in the depiction of cats and was a member of an influential family of Munich painters.
Julius Anton Adam was a pupil of Professor Michael Echter and later Wilhelm von Dietz at the Munich Academy of Art. He later became a professor himself.


Benno Rafael Adam is a German animalist painter.
He began his fine art studies under the tutelage of his father, the balloonist painter Albrecht Adam. He masterfully depicted hunting dogs and horses, especially scenes of hunting wild animals. Benno Adam also illustrated several textbooks and manuals on livestock breeding.
Benno's son Emil Adam also became an artist.


Jean-Victor Vincent Adam was a French painter and lithographer.
Adam came from a dynasty of artists and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He painted views of various cities, including Russian Kazan and Yekaterinburg, as well as battle scenes from Napoleon's military campaigns. Collections of images of French military costumes prepared by Adam were published. His genre paintings with hunting scenes and animals are also known.


Albrecht Adam was a Bavarian painter of the first half of the 19th century. He is best known for the fact that as a member of Napoleon's Grand Army he took part in the campaign against Russia in 1812 as the official artist of the headquarters of the IV (Italian) Corps. Throughout the campaign, the artist made sketches and drawings, capturing many of the important events of the campaign. Later, many of these sketches became the basis for full-fledged paintings, and to subjects from the Napoleonic wars, which he witnessed, Adam addressed until the end of his very long life.
Albrecht Adam was also the author of memoirs, in which he described in detail the Battle of Borodino and a number of other key events of the War of 1812.


Jacques-Laurent Agasse is a Swiss animal painter.
As a young man he studied at the veterinary school in Paris and was well versed in equine anatomy. In 1880 he moved to London and began painting dogs and racehorses, as well as exotic animals such as giraffes and zebras, which he observed in London zoos. Later, Agasse began to paint landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes as well.


Henry Thomas Alcken was an English painter and engraver chiefly known as a caricaturist and illustrator of sporting subjects and coaching scenes. His most prolific period of painting and drawing occurred between 1816 and 1831.


Samuel Alken the Elder was a British painter, printmaker and illustrator.
Samuel Alken studied at the Royal Academy School in London. In 1779 he published A New Book of Ornaments Designed and Engraved by Samuel Alken, and later established himself as one of the most distinguished engravers in the new technique of aquatint. Alken produced magnificent compositions of the British countryside, including moonlit night scenes. His works include engravings by George Morland, Richard Wilson, Thomas Rowlandson, and Francis Wheatley. In 1796 his plates of sixteen views of the lakes of Cumberland and Westmorland, after drawings by John Ames and John Smith, were published, and in 1798 a set of aquatint views of North Wales after drawings by the Rev. Brian Broughton.
His sons, Samuel Alken the Younger (1784-1824), Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851) and Samuel Henry Alken (1810-1894) also became artists.


Samuel Henry Alken the Younger was a British painter.
Samuel Henry Alken was the son of Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851) and grandson of Samuel Alken Senior (1756-1815). Like his father, he usually depicted equestrian sporting scenes, but did so in sets. The most famous of the sets of paintings by Henry Alken, Jr. is a depiction of hunting at Belvoir Castle.


Richard Ansdell was a British painter of animals and genre scenes.
Ansdell's subject matter was compared to that of Edwin Landseer, though critical opinion was that, though popular, his works lacked the latter's emotional impact. His reputation was as a hardworking but occasionally over-proud artist; for instance, he received no royal commissions after refusing to paint Queen Victoria's dogs unless they were brought to his studio.


Carl Johann Arnold was a German painter, draftsman, and graphic artist.
He was the son and pupil of the designer and wallpaper maker, landscape and portrait painter, lithographer, and decorator Carl Heinrich Arnold (1793-1874).
He first studied at the Academy in Kassel and then went to Berlin. Carl Johann Arnold painted pictures of animals, canvases on historical events, and numerous portraits. In particular, he created many portraits of the German Emperor Wilhelm II, for which he was apparently appointed royal Prussian court painter. Arnold also produced drawings, etchings, and lithographs that were published in the popular magazines of the time.


Berthe Constance Ursule Art was a Belgian still life painter. She was trained by Alfred Stevens and advised by Franz Binjé. Berthe Art exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts and The Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. She became a member of the Brussels-based club called Cercle des Femmes Peintres which was active 1888–1893. They were the Belgian equivalent of the French Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs. She began a Brussels gallery in 1911 together with some friends from the (by then defunct) Circle of Women Painters. The gallery was called the Galerie Lyceum.




Charles Aubry was a French painter, illustrator and caricaturist who worked in Saumur from 1810-1840.
From 1817. Aubry made drawings and illustrations of military costume. He was soon recognized as one of the best lithographers and draughtsmen of military scenes, showing a particular talent for depicting cavalry. Charles Aubry's colored lithographs were published in a publication on the uniforms of the Swiss Royal Guard (Collection des Uniforms de l'Armee Francaise, 1823), as well as caricatures in the Comic Album de Pathologie (1823).
In 1822 Charles Aubry was appointed professor of art at l'Ecole Militaire de Saumur.


John James Audubon was a French-American ornithologist and painter, renowned for his groundbreaking illustrations of American birds. Born in 1785 in Les Cayes, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Audubon is remembered for his keen observation skills and innovative artistic techniques.
Audubon's most famous work, "The Birds of America," transformed the field of ornithology by presenting birds in lifelike poses and detailed backgrounds. Published between 1827 and 1838, it contained 435 hand-colored engravings, showcasing over 489 bird species. Carl Daniel David Friedrich Bach was a German artist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Baroque period. He is known as a painter, graphic artist and printmaker.
Bach worked in the historical genre, was a portraitist, animalist, created canvases on allegorical subjects in the spirit of his era. In his works he combined elements of baroque and classicism. The artist often worked in the etching needle technique.


Jean-Jacques Bachelier was a French painter and innovator of porcelain and a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
Originally a still-life painter, he later became world-renowned for his significant contributions to applied art. In 1765, Bachelier founded an art and crafts school in Paris with his own funds. He was in charge of the painters at the porcelain manufactory in Vincennes, where figures were produced from unglazed porcelain - biscuit. For many years Bachelier was the Director of Sevres porcelain manufactory and in fact became the creator of the Sevres style.
Bachelier also conducted research on encaustic painting (a painting technique in which the binding substance of paints is wax) and published works on art education.


Friedrich Baedeker, full name Friedrich Wilhelm Justus Baedeker or F. W. J. Baedeker, was a German pharmacist, bird egg collector and bird illustrator.
In addition to his work as a pharmacist, Baedeker had a passion for ornithology and was a good artist. His 774 watercolors are known, depicting some 386 European birds. In time, Baedeker became widely known as an ornithologist and zoologist, and his huge collection included about 4,000 eggs of various European and exotic birds.
Baedeker joined the Deutsche Ornithologen-Gesellschaft (German Society of Ornithologists) in 1851, shortly after its founding, and published several books on birds. One of these was Die Eier der europaeischen Voegel nach der Natur gemalt ("The Eggs of European Birds Drawn from Nature").


Qi Baishi was a Chinese painter, noted for the whimsical, often playful style of his works. Born to a peasant family from Xiangtan, Hunan, Qi taught himself to paint, sparked by the Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden. After he turned 40, he traveled, visiting various scenic spots in China. After 1917 he settled in Beijing. Some of Qi's major influences include the early Qing dynasty painter Bada Shanren (八大山人) and the Ming dynasty artist Xu Wei (徐渭).
The subjects of his paintings include almost everything, commonly animals, scenery, figures, toys, vegetables, and so on. He theorized that "paintings must be something between likeness and unlikeness, much like today's vulgarians, but not like to cheat popular people". In his later years, many of his works depict mice, shrimp or birds. He was also good at seal carving and called himself "the rich man of three hundred stone seals" (三百石印富翁). In 1953, he was elected president of the China Artists Association (中國美術家協會).


James Barenger is a British animal artist and illustrator.
He was born James Barenger Sr. James Barenger was a metal chaser and naturalist painter. Barenger specialized in depicting horses, dogs, and other animals, as well as noblemen's hunting scenes, which were consistently successful in the 19th century.
Barenger's patrons included the Duke of Grafton, the Marquis of Londonderry and the Earl of Derby. The artist produced entire series of prints depicting hunting, shooting, bullfighting and horse racing, which were published in sporting publications.


Jacques Barraband was a French zoological and botanical illustrator, renowned for his lifelike renderings of tropical birds. His pictures were based on mounted specimens and his illustration was considered the most accurate ones made during the early 1800s.




Jeanne Bauck, full name Jeanna Maria Charlotta Bauck, was a Swedish-German artist.
She studied painting in Dresden and Düsseldorf with the best teachers of the time. Later in Munich, Jeanne met the artist Berthe Wegmann, who became her friend. The emancipated women painted portraits of each other and exhibited their work in the Paris Salon. In 1882 Bauck opened a school for women artists in Munich and along with teaching painted landscapes, children's portraits.


William Holbrook Beard was an American artistic painter who is known best for his satirical paintings of beasts performing human-like activities.
Beard was a prolific artist. His humorous treatment of bears, cats, dogs, horses and monkeys, generally with some human occupation and expression, usually satirical, gave him a great vogue at one time, and his pictures were much reproduced.


Fritz Behn, full name Max Adolf Friedrich Behn, is a German sculptor and graphic artist who became famous primarily for his sculptures of African animals. He studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts.
Fritz Behn was a member of the Munich Secession.




Thomas Bewick was an English wood-engraver and natural history author. Early in his career he took on all kinds of work such as engraving cutlery, making the wood blocks for advertisements, and illustrating children's books. He gradually turned to illustrating, writing and publishing his own books, gaining an adult audience for the fine illustrations in A History of Quadrupeds.


Joseph Birbeck I was a renowned English ceramic painter born in 1862. Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, was a French artist known best as a painter of animals (animalière). She also made sculpture in a realist style. Her paintings include Ploughing in the Nivernais, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and The Horse Fair, which was exhibited at the Salon of 1853 (finished in 1855) and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the nineteenth century.


Emma Minnie Boyd, born Emma Minnie Beckett, was an Australian artist. She exhibited publicly between 1874 and 1932 with the Victorian Society of Artists, the International Centenary Exhibition of 1888 (Melbourne), the Royal Academy of Arts (London) and in a joint exhibition with her husband at Como House in Melbourne in 1902.
Emma Minnie Boyd had a talent for watercolour landscapes, although she painted in both watercolour and oil, depicting interiors, figures, portraits, still lifes and floral studies. She is part of the Boyd artistic dynasty that began with Emma and her husband Arthur.


Félix Bracquemond was a French painter, etcher, and printmaker. He played a key role in the revival of printmaking, encouraging artists such as Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas and Camille Pissarro to use this technique.
Unusually for a prominent artist of this period, he also designed pottery for a number of French factories, in an innovative style that marks the beginning of Japonisme in France.


Anton Braith was a German painter of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He is known as a painter, landscape painter and animalist.
Anton Braith was active for a total of 53 years. His creative path consists of four periods. At first, the artist imitated Dutch painting, then specialized in portraits of animals surrounded by nature. Between 1874 and 1894 he produced his most outstanding works, characterized by vividness and drama. In his last years he focused on animal scenes in mountain meadows, gradually retiring from active artistic endeavors.
Braith was professor of painting at the Munich Academy of Painting and an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Munich.


Józef Brandt was a Polish battlefield painter.
After changing his mind about becoming an engineer, in 1862 the aspiring artist moved to Munich, where he studied under Franz Adam and Karl Piloti, and eventually opened his own studio. Brandt was recognized in Munich as one of the outstanding artists of the Polish school; he quickly achieved both financial and artistic success here, and his studio attracted many pupils. By 1875 he was running an informal school for young artists, most of whom were Polish, and in the same year he was elected a member of the Berlin Academy. In 1878 he was elected a member of the Munich Academy, and in 1900. - Prague Academy.
The main theme of Brandt's work is scenes of the 17th-century wars in Poland, the Tatar and Swedish invasions. He accurately depicted the ammunition, arms and equipment of their participants and was especially fond of drawing horses.
Józef Brandt's paintings are in almost all Polish museums, and he is represented in museums and private collections in North America and Europe.


Jacques Raymond Brascassat was a French painter known for his landscapes and animal paintings.
Jacques Raymond Brascassat was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts since 1846. Among his pupils was Charles-François Daubigny.


Alfred-Arthur Brunel de Neuville was a French painter known mainly for paintings of still life and animals, especially cats. His works are in museums at Béziers, Brest, Chateau Thierry, and Louviers.


Arthur Brusenbauch was an Austrian painter. Arthur Brusenbauch learned from Johann Kautsky and then worked as a stage decorator himself. He studied in Vienna at the Staatsgewerbeschule and the Academy of Fine Arts, interrupted by military service and imprisonment. In 1920 he became a member of the Vienna Secession, and in 1939 he moved to the Künstlerhaus. In 1928 he had represented Austria in the art competitions of the 1928 Olympic Games. From 1937 to 1941 he participated in all major German art exhibitions in Munich with seven oil paintings. There, in 1939, Hitler acquired the picture of Melk an der Donau in festive decorations. Brusenbauch, who is attributed to late impressionism, dealt with fresco painting and graphics.


Anton Burger was a German painter, draftsman and etcher. He was a prolific and versatile painter, producing works in almost every genre. His paintings sold very well and, in the area around Kronberg, it was considered a sign of good taste to have a "Burger" in one's home. In 1861, he and Jakob Fürchtegott Dielmann (an old friend from his days at the Städelschule) founded the Kronberg Artists' Colony, where he remained until his death. He was highly regarded and came to be known as the "King of Kronberg".


Randolph Caldecott was a British artist and illustrator, born in Chester. The Caldecott Medal was named in his honour. He exercised his art chiefly in book illustrations. His abilities as an artist were promptly and generously recognised by the Royal Academy. Caldecott greatly influenced illustration of children's books during the nineteenth century. Two books illustrated by him, priced at a shilling each, were published every Christmas for eight years.
Caldecott also illustrated novels and accounts of foreign travel, made humorous drawings depicting hunting and fashionable life, drew cartoons and he made sketches of the Houses of Parliament inside and out, and exhibited sculptures and paintings in oil and watercolour in the Royal Academy and galleries.




Percy Carpenter is a British painter.
Percy was the son of the artists William Hookham Carpenter and Margaret Sarah Carpenter, and studied painting at the Royal Academy. Between 1855 and 1860 he traveled to Singapore, Ceylon, and India, where he specialized in hunting subjects and painted several paintings. Some of Carpenter's works were lithographed and published in an album.


Charles Ferdinand Ceramano, born Charles Ferdinand Semain, was a Belgian painter and illustrator of the Barbizon school.
Ceramano's favorite subjects were pastoral landscapes and scenes of sheep in a sheepfold or in a meadow.




Peter Jakob Freiherr Clodt von Jürgensburg (Russian: Пётр Карлович Клодт фон Юргенсбург) was a Russian sculptor of Baltic German descent, renowned for his significant contributions to Russian monumental art during the reign of Nicholas I. Born on June 5, 1805, in Saint Petersburg, Clodt initially embarked on a military career before pursuing his artistic ambitions. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he honed his skills in horse sculpture, eventually earning acclaim from the Emperor himself.
Clodt's most celebrated works include the "Horse Tamers" sculptures on the Anichkov Bridge, unveiled in 1851, and the first monument to a poet in the Russian Empire, the statue of Ivan Krylov in the Summer Garden (1848-1855). His mastery in equestrian statues is evident in the Monument to Nicholas I on Saint Isaac's Square, notable for its technical innovation as the world's first equestrian statue supported solely by the horse's two rear legs. This piece, installed between 1856 and 1859, remains a historic achievement in sculptural engineering.

Marie Collart-Henrotin was a Belgian artist who mainly painted landscapes and animals. Collart was primarily self-taught as an artist. She became a founding member of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts in 1868. In 1870, she won a gold medal at the Salon des artistes français. She became the first women to be named a Chevalier in the Belgian Order of Leopold in 1880. Collart exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts and The Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Her work is included in the collections of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.


Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was an American artist, known primarily for his depictions of anthropomorphic dogs playing poker.
Cassius Marcellus Coolidge often signed his works as Cash Coolidge (for more comic effect).


Thomas Sidney Cooper was an English painter. He studied in London at the British Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Thomas Sidney Cooper painted idyllic landscapes and animals in the spirit of the old Flemish masters.


Franciscus Eduardus Maria (Franz) Courtens (1854–1943) was a Belgian painter. He was a leading figure in the Dendermonde School, famous for his paintings of nature and landscapes. Courtens was professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (NHISKA) in Antwerp from 1904 till 1924. He was a personal friend of Leopold II, who gave him the privilege of free access to the royal Parc of Laeken. Some of his paintings stil remain in the Royal collection.




Alfred Kubin was an outstanding Austrian engraver, illustrator and writer, and a prominent representative of the Symbolic and Expressionist trends in the visual arts in the first half of the 20th century. Alfred Kubin's works are full of phantasmagoric and grotesque depictions of dreams, motifs of desolation and fear.
