Wilhelm Schmurr was a German painter and co-founder of the Sonderbund in Düsseldorf. His style, characterized by clear expression, was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Symbolists, and Realists. He received several awards and medals for his work and was a member of various art associations. Schmurr taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and inspired by the farmers after the war, he created scenes of simple life and still lifes. He was awarded the Karl-Ernst-Osthaus-Preis and the Bundesverdienstkreuz erster Klasse and became an honorary member of various artist associations.


Alphonse Asselbergs was a Belgian painter, primarily of landscapes and forest scenes. Much of his training in art came from Huberti, and he would travel with him in the area around Namur. It was there he befriended Théodore T'Scharner, a student of Ferdinand Marinus, with whom he would go on painting expeditions in the Ardennes. In the summer of 1866, he took an extended trip with Huberti, to the artists' colony at Anseremme, where he was first exposed to the concept of painting en plein aire. In 1867 year he joined the painters at the artists' colony in Tervuren, where he stayed regularly until 1871. The Tervuren Schhol later became known as the Belgian equivalent of the Barbizon School. By 1868, he was receiving good reviews at the salon in Ghent. That same year, he became one of the co-founders of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts. By 1869, he was exhibiting in Brussels. From 1873 to 1874, he visited Algeria with the watercolorist, Arthur Bouvier. This resulted in a number of Orientalist canvases.


Gottfried Albert Maria Bachem was a German painter and illustrator of the Düsseldorf School. Bachem, who belonged to the Malkasten artists' association from 1921 to 1932, painted portraits, genre scenes and landscapes, and he also illustrated children's books. From 1900 he took part in numerous art exhibitions, including in Berlin.


Myron G. Barlow was an American painter and illustrator known for his genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes. He was began his artistic training at the Art Institute of Chicago. Later, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he was influenced by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements.
Barlow worked as an illustrator for various publications, including Harper's Weekly, Scribner's Magazine, and The Saturday Evening Post. He also taught at the Art Students League in New York City.
Barlow's paintings often depicted everyday life, with a focus on working-class people and their surroundings. His use of color and light gave his paintings a sense of warmth and intimacy.
Barlow was a member of several art organizations, including the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Artists, and the American Watercolor Society. He received numerous awards and honors during his lifetime, including a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915.
Today, his paintings can be found in several museums and institutions, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.


Vasily Nikolaevich Basov (Russian: Василий Николаевич Басов) was a Soviet artist of the mid-twentieth century. He is known as a painter, graphic artist, and representative of socialist realism in art. His oeuvre includes landscapes, portraits and genre paintings, with a special focus on rural subjects.
Since 1943 Vasily Basov actively participated in exhibitions, both national and international. His works have been exhibited in various countries, including Poland, China, Bulgaria and Romania.
Basov's works are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Art Museum of the Altai Territory and other museums, as well as in private collections.


Francois Boisrond is a contemporary French painter. He studied from 1977 to 1980 at the National School of decorative Arts. In 1981 he became involved in the Free Figuration movement. Inspired by visual products (advertising products, posters, stickers, video games etc.), cartoon characters, and by using acrylic paint, Francois Boisrond’s works are colourful, figurative and enigmatic, and his simplified shapes are often outlined in black. He portrays mainly characters, frequently symbolic in everyday situations, but he also depicts urban, maritime or rural landscapes. Besides this Boisrond creates humanitarian and publicity posters. Since the 1990’s the artist has become interested in an imaginary public and the everyday life that invades each and every one of us.


Emma Minnie Boyd, born Emma Minnie Beckett, was an Australian artist. She exhibited publicly between 1874 and 1932 with the Victorian Society of Artists, the International Centenary Exhibition of 1888 (Melbourne), the Royal Academy of Arts (London) and in a joint exhibition with her husband at Como House in Melbourne in 1902.
Emma Minnie Boyd had a talent for watercolour landscapes, although she painted in both watercolour and oil, depicting interiors, figures, portraits, still lifes and floral studies. She is part of the Boyd artistic dynasty that began with Emma and her husband Arthur.


Arthur Merric Boyd was an Australian painter. He and his wife Emma Minnie (née à Beckett) established a lifestyle of being artists which many generations followed to create the popular image of the Boyd family. Boyd travelled and painted a good deal on the continent of Europe, and returned to Australia about the end of 1893, where he lived mostly in Sandringham and other suburbs of Melbourne for the rest of his life. He occasionally sent good work to the exhibitions of the Victorian Artists' Society, but never mixed much in the artistic life of his time.


Yves Brayer was a French painter and lithographer known for his landscapes, portraits and still lifes.
Brayer studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and then in Rome. He was influenced by classical art and inspired by Mediterranean landscapes, which he often depicted in his paintings. He was also interested in the culture of ancient Greece, which influenced his work.
Brye's early work was inspired by the Cubist and Surrealist movements. He was a founding member of the Paris School, a group of artists working in the French capital in the mid-twentieth century. He was also a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts and a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
Bryeux's work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums around the world, including the Louvre in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. His paintings are in many private collections.
Over the course of his career, Brye has received numerous awards and honours, including the Grand Prix de Rome and the Prix de l'Institut de France. He is considered one of the most important French artists of the 20th century.




Gary Bunt is a British self-taught artist known for his paintings of the English suburbs and countryside. He took up art to overcome a serious illness. Gary Bunt in a primitive style, with sophisticated simplicity and good humor depicts ordinary life with its simple joys.


Anton Burger was a German painter, draftsman and etcher. He was a prolific and versatile painter, producing works in almost every genre. His paintings sold very well and, in the area around Kronberg, it was considered a sign of good taste to have a "Burger" in one's home. In 1861, he and Jakob Fürchtegott Dielmann (an old friend from his days at the Städelschule) founded the Kronberg Artists' Colony, where he remained until his death. He was highly regarded and came to be known as the "King of Kronberg".




Auguste Chabaud was a French painter and sculptor. At the age of fourteen Chabaud joined the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Avignon. In 1899 he went to Paris to continue his artistic training at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. There he met Henri Matisse and André Derain. In 1900 he returned to his parents' vineyard in southern France. In 1901, he was forced to leave Paris again in order to secure his livelihood. He worked on a ship and got to know the West African coast. In the following years he became acquainted with the Parisian nightlife. In the Paris neighborhood Montmartre, where he had his studio, he painted various scenes of Parisian life. Chabaud's Cubist phase began in 1911, where he also began sculpting. In the following years he had many exhibitions, including 1913 in New York, where his works were exhibited alongside those of artists such as Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and Picasso. After his return from the first World War Chabaud settled down in Graveson. From 1920 he had his "blue period". He used the Prussian Blue as the only color in his works. From then, he focused exclusively on the south of France. He painted scenes of rural life, the farmers, and the hills and trails of the Alpilles. In 1992, the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur opened the Musée Auguste Chabaud in his honor.


Marie Collart-Henrotin was a Belgian artist who mainly painted landscapes and animals. Collart was primarily self-taught as an artist. She became a founding member of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts in 1868. In 1870, she won a gold medal at the Salon des artistes français. She became the first women to be named a Chevalier in the Belgian Order of Leopold in 1880. Collart exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts and The Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Her work is included in the collections of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.




Ray Austin Crooke was an Australian artist known for for serene views of Islander people and ocean landscapes, many of which are based on the art of Paul Gauguin. He won the Archibald Prize in 1969 with a portrait of George Johnston. His painting The Offering (1971) is in the Vatican Museum collection. Many of his works are in Australian galleries. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the 1993 Australia Day Honours, "in recognition of service to the arts, particularly as a landscape artist".


Alexander Joseph Daiwaille was a Dutch portrait painter. He specialized in painting portraits, like his father, although he later in life painted landscapes. He traveled and worked all around the Netherlands and Germany. Daiwaille then moved and settled in Brussels where he lived until his death in 1888.






Edmond De Schampheleer was a Belgian landscape painter and engraver. After completing his studies with Eugène-François de Block in Antwerp, he set himself up as a landscape painter; taking a realistic approach, derived from Théodore Fourmois and the French artists of the Barbizon School. He also combined plein aire techniques with large-scale painting in his studio. His style increasingly came to resemble that of the 17th century Dutch artists.


Jakob Fürchtegott Dielmann was a German illustrator, genre and landscape painter. He focused on genre art, but also painted plein air style at the Mittelrhein, the Main and throughout Hesse. In 1841, Gerhardt von Reutern invited him to visit the Artists' Colony in Willingshausen, where he created scenes of village life. The following year, he opened a studio at the Städelschule and took further lessons with Anton Burger. In the early 1860s, he and Burger moved to Kronberg, where they founded their own artists' colony. In addition to painting, he often worked as an illustrator.


Albert Dubois-Pillet was a French Neo-Impressionist painter and army officer. He played an important role in founding the Société des Artistes Indépendants and was one of the first artists to embrace Pointillism.
Albert Dubois-Pieu's paintings often depicted landscapes, seascapes and city scenes, conveying the effects of light and atmosphere with meticulous attention to detail. His use of vivid and contrasting pointillistic colours created a sense of depth, brightness and optical blending when viewed from a distance.
Dubois-Pieu was influenced by the theories of colour and light of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, two prominent figures in the Neo-Impressionist movement. He participated in several exhibitions with these artists and other members of the movement, contributing to the dissemination and appreciation of Neo-Impressionism.


Pierre Louis Dubourcq was a Dutch landscape painter, lithographer and etcher. He was a student of Jan van Ravenswaay in Hilversum in 1834 and of Andreas Schelfhout in The Hague in 1835. He mainly painted mountain and forest landscapes and he etched, drew, created watercolors and lithographs. From 1834 to 1858 he took part in the exhibitions in Amsterdam and The Hague. Prince Alexander of Orange-Nassau commissioned him to do some watercolors of the falconry hunts at Het Loo Castle. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae, the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten and the Natura Artis Magistra Society.

Alexander Eckener was a German painter and graphic artist. He received his initial artistic training and inspiration from Jacob Nöbbe, a local artist in Flensburg. With his support, Eckener was able to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, from 1888 to 1892. After graduating, he returned to his home town and became part of the Ekensund Artists' Colony. In 1899, he went to Stuttgart and was accepted by the State Academy of Fine Arts. There, he was a master student of Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth, who introduced him to the art of etching; another genre in which he became proficient. After 1908, he taught at that Academy himself and was named a Professor in 1912. He took on the position of Professor of lithography and woodcuts in 1925.


William Teulon Blandford Fletcher is a British artist and one of the early members of the influential Newlyn School of Artists. He joined the Lyfe class at the Royal Academy of Charles Wehrle in Antwerp.
Blandford Fletcher travelled and worked as an itinerant artist until settling in Dorking in 1904 and then in Abingdon-on-Thames in 1915. Fletcher's best known work is Evicted (painted in Steventon in 1887), the first painting acquired by the Queensland Art Gallery in 1896.


Théodore Fourmois was a Belgian landscape painter and printmaker. Théodore Fourmois learned drawing in the lithographic's workshop of Antoine Dewasme-Pletinckx in Brussels. He first exposed his works in this city in 1836. He began painting landscapes of Ardennes and Campine, several studies and panoramic views while traveling in Dauphiné and Switzerland. He took part, in 1855 and 1867, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Many of his works are exposed in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.


Jean Frélaut was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator who studied at the École des beaux-arts de Paris and learned printmaking from Marcel Beltrand and Donald Shaw Mac Laughlan. He participated in the group of independent printmakers founded by Jean Émile Laboureur and Raoul Dufy and was appointed curator of the museum in Vannes in 1937. Frélaut's work is characterized by his love for nature and his ancestral territory in Morbihan, which is reflected in his engravings and drawings.




Alfred Fritzsching is a German artist known as Painter, graphic artist, draftsman, sculptor, commercial, commercial graphic artist. He began his training as a commercial graphic artist at the Blocherer School for Graphic and Advertising in Munich and worked as an advertising specialist. In 1970 Alfred Fritzsching became a member of Munich Artists 'cooperative and participated in exhibitions at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. From 1978, he worked as a freelance painter and also as board member and juror of the Munich Artists' Cooperative.


Emile Edwin Ganz is a Swiss-Belgian painter, specializing in the representation of horses and military scenes. In his early days, Ganz mainly drew military scenes, a genre that only a few 19th-century artists mastered. His masterpiece in the genre is The Attack of Scherpenheuvel, a report on the maneuvers of the grenadiers in 1894. In 1901 he entered the service of Princess Clémentine as a painter; he held this position until 1903. In 1903, he also brushed some of King Leopold II's horses. From that moment, he was no longer interested only in the horse itself, but in the regional draft horse, as well as in the people and the rural world: newspaper sellers, old horses in a depot, the harvest in the fields , beet harvest, landscape. Many of his designs for military uniforms were printed in color lithograph.


Spencer Frederick Gore was a British painter of landscapes, music-hall scenes and interiors, usually with single figures. He was the first president of the Camden Town Group, and was influenced by the Post-Impressionists.


Antonio Gravina was an Italian painter. He was born in Naples and studied at the Art Institute in that city. The setting, the chromatic range, makes his work a valuable item to collectors the world over. His subjects are hugely varied. Quiet bays bathed in sunlight, the fishermen carefully mending their nets, the transparent emerald sea reflecting the clear sky; or his paintings of stormy seas, portrayed with vivid, essential, sharp brush strokes, those heavy grey skies warning of an imminent storm. Unforgettable too, his restful spring time parks, his characteristically colourful Parisian bistro customers, his sunny cottage scenes with their softness and warmth. All his paintings bring to mind the masterpieces of the great 18th century artists, and yet his work is very much of the 21st century. He has had 48 exhibitions in Rome, Naples, Frankfurt, Sydney and Vancouver as well as occasional ones at Stewart Gallery in England.


Jacob Grimmer was a Flemish painter who was active during the Late Renaissance. He specialised in landscapes and genre scenes, often depicting the everyday life of peasants.
His style was strongly influenced by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael.
Grimmer's paintings are characterized by detailed, realistic depictions of nature. His landscapes are characterized by wide expanses and intricate detail.
Jacob Grimmer was known for his ability to capture the nuances of human behaviour, so his genre works depict the lives of peasants with a touch of humour and whimsy.


Hermann Grobe was a German maritime painter.
He studied at the Munich and Düsseldorf Art Academies. His favorite subject for Grobe was the sea and everything connected with it. He painted a lot of pictures with ships on the pier and everyday scenes on the shore, sailors on the shore and fishing boats.


Gabriel Mikaelovich Gyurdzhyan (Armenian Գաբրիել Գյուրջյան) was an Armenian painter. People's Artist of the Armenian SSR (1945), art historian, teacher. One of the founders of the Soviet Armenian fine arts.




Theodor Joseph Hagen was a German painter and art teacher.
He was one of the founders of German Impressionism. After trying out several styles during his early years, he became attracted to the plein-air painting of the French Barbizon School.
From 1893, he was a member of the Munich Secession and, from 1902, the Berlin Secession.


Georges Jean Marie Haquette was a prominent French painter, particularly known for his portrayals of fishermen and maritime scenes. Born in Paris, Haquette trained under notable 19th-century artists Aime Millet and Alexandre Cabanel, drawing influence from French Realist painters like Courbet. His unique focus was on the lives and labors of sea harvesters, differentiating his work from contemporaries who focused more on land-based peasants.
Haquette debuted at the Paris Salon in 1875 and continued to exhibit there, earning various recognitions including an honorable mention in 1878 and medals in 1880 and 1901. His notable works include "Un homme à la mer!" (1886), "La femme du matelot" (1887), and "La levée des filets" (1888). His painting "Net Fishers" was featured in "Famous Paintings of the World" (1894), emphasizing the picturesque and labor-intensive life of coastal peasants.

Alfred Hazledine was a Belgian painter and graphic artist. Hazledine was a student of Ernest Blanc-Garin in Brussels and of Adrien-Joseph Heymans. He lived and worked for a long time in Wechelderzande, where there was a true artists' colony. He mainly painted landscapes in Impressionist style. Hazledine was a member of the Vie et Lumière group that brought together Impressionists and Luminists for exhibitions, and was also a member of L'Estampe and of the National Confederation of Painters and Sculptors of Belgium.


Ernest Martin Hennings (Jr.) was an American artist and member of the Taos Society of Artists. In 1901 that Hennings began taking classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which was largely based on the great European art schools and made particularly emphasis on the importance of drawing. Hennings took up work as a commercial artist, mostly painting murals and portraits around Chicago. Hennings' primary interest was in portrait painting, with his primary subject being the Native Americans living in and around Taos Pueblo. In 1922 he was awarded the Clyde M. Carr Prize from the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the Institute's Fine Arts Building Prize. By the 1920s, the now established painter was building his reputation on the national scene, with exhibitions and awards including. Many art collectors throughout America sought out his paintings. Today paintings by Hennings are housed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Stark Museum of Art, Booth Western Art Museum etc.


Hugo Curt Herrmann was a German Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter; associated with the Berlin Secession. Although he was primarily interested in painting portraits, he also spent some time with the history painter Wilhelm von Lindenschmit at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. In 1885, he set up as a portrait painter in Munich and befriended the art critic Richard Muther. In 1893, he moved to Berlin, where he opened a drawing and painting school for women. In 1898, he became one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession and sat on its advisory board. He operated his school intermittently until 1903, when he joined the Deutscher Künstlerbund. He also worked to promote younger artists, such as Arthur Segal, Alexej von Jawlensky, Adolf Erbslöh and others associated with Die Brücke. He was named a Professor at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1917.


Johann Karl Hetz is a German painter and professor at the School of Applied Arts in Neuburg am Donau.
He studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, and for more than 20 years was professor of drawing and modeling at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich.
Hetz painted many genre paintings, architectural sketches and landscapes of Bavaria, Swabia, Tyroli, Italy, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has exhibited a large number of watercolors from these southern countries in Bavarian exhibitions and galleries. Hetz is also a recognized master of interior paintings and genre scenes from the lives of ordinary people and the bourgeoisie in 19th century Europe. Many of his genre paintings were published as illustrations in newspapers and magazines. These works are a valuable source of information about the social trends of the time.




William Victor Higgins is an American artist. He is known for his landscape paintings and is considered one of the most important representatives of the Taos Society of Artists. He studied painting at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and at the Académie Julian in Paris with Robert Henri, René Menard and Lucien Simon.
William Victor Higgins often depicted the rugged landscapes and Indians of the American Southwest in his paintings. He was particularly interested in Native American culture and often painted portraits of them. His work is characterized by bold strokes and vivid colours.


Ernst Huber, an Austrian painter, was a significant figure in Austrian Classical Modernism. Born in Vienna in 1895, Huber initially trained as a typesetter and lithographer, but he was predominantly self-taught as a painter. His artistic journey began with his first exhibition success in 1919, which caught the attention of the notable Viennese architect Josef Hoffmann. Huber's membership in the Zinkenbacher Malerkolonie, alongside fellow artists like Ferdinand Kitt and Franz Zülow, was a highlight of his career.
Huber's art predominantly features landscapes, with his early works showcasing regions such as Lower Austria, Upper Austria, and the Salzkammergut. His travels in the 1920s expanded his repertoire, influencing his paintings significantly. Huber was adept in various mediums, including oils, watercolors, reverse glass, and tile paintings, as well as book illustrations. His talent was recognized with several awards, including the Austrian State Award and the Honour Prize of Vienna.
One of his notable works, "The Bridge," created in 1919 using brush and black ink, ink wash, and watercolor with black chalk, is part of the collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This piece reflects his unique style and contribution to the art world. Huber passed away in 1960 in Vienna, but his legacy continues, with his works featured in numerous museums and galleries.

Peter Hurd was an American painter whose work is strongly associated with the people and landscapes of San Patricio, New Mexico. He is equally acclaimed for his portraits and his western landscapes. His large egg tempera paintings earned him national recognition. During World War II, Hurd worked for Life magazine as a war correspondent attached to the US Air Force. He covered almost all the fronts of the far-flung battle line, creating hundreds of "War Sketches" that range from poignant to comic. Some of Hurd’s most well-known portraits were of his neighbors, family, and friends at Sentinel Ranch. He loved to paint people who were deeply connected to the land, and always showed them outdoors, against the hills and sky. Many of Hurd's works can be seen at the Hurd-La Rinconada Gallery in San Patricio, New Mexico.


Jacobus Albertus Michael Jacobs, known as Jacob Jacobs was a Belgian landscape and seascape painter in the Romantic style, with a preference for northern and "oriental" scenes. His first exhibitions came in 1833. He took a trip to the North Sea in 1834, and a final study trip through the Netherlands in 1837 produced much material. In 1838, he left on a long sea voyage that would take him to Gibraltar, the North African coast, Egypt, the Dardanelles, Istanbul (where he remained for several months), Asiatic Turkey and Rhodes.[1] While in Ankara, he met and befriended his fellow Belgian painter, Florent Mols, and they continued travelling together; sailing down the Nile as far as Nubia. During these travels, he compiled two huge albums of drawings and notes that he would use for inspiration the rest of his life.


Angelo Jank was a German animal painter, illustrator and member of the Munich Secession. He was the son of the German painter Christian Jank and specialized in scenes with horses and riders. For many years, he was also employed as an illustrator for the magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus, And he was also an instructor at the Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to his canvases, he painted murals at the Justizpalast and scenes from history at the Reichstag building in Berlin. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1936 Summer Olympics.


Robert Jobling was a British artist. He first had work accepted by both the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists in 1883. He painted regularly at the fishing village of Cullercoats and later at Staithes. He attained a position of some standing in the Staithes group. His main artistic exposure was in exhibitions in the north of England.


Joseph Malachy Kavanagh was an Irish painter. He is known for his painting landscapes, seascapes, rural scenes in Ireland, France and Belgium and occasional portraits. He particularly was inspired by the landscape in and around Dublin. Kavanagh first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1875. In September 1881 he won the Albert Scholarship. On a trip to Brittany in 1883, he met up with a host of other young artists all of whom were influenced by the plein air naturalism of Jules Bastien-Lepage. In 1890, he published in Dublin a series of prints from etchings he created of landscape scenes from Mont St. Michel, Bruges and of "A Metallurgist" which were acquired by the British Museum in 1902. During the 1890s, he resided in Clontarf and painted numerous views around Howth and its environs, many aspects of Dublin Bay and his famous views on the sands of Portrane, Sutton, Portmarnock, Merrion and the North Bull. Another related group entails views taken along Dublin’s riverbanks.


Philips Koninck was a Dutch landscape painter and younger brother of Jacob Koninck.
He painted chiefly broad, sunny landscapes, full of space, light and atmosphere; they are seen from a high perspective, allowing a prominent view of the sky. Portraits by him, somewhat in the manner of Rembrandt, also exist; there are examples of these in the galleries at Copenhagen and Oslo.
