Further details

MATTHIJS SCHOEVAERDTS (1664-1702/1703), A FISH MARKET ON THE BANKS OF A RIVER, A VILLAGE BEYOND, OIL ON PANEL, INDISTINCTLY SIGNED (LOWER RIGHT)

This charming painting captures all the tumult of villagers and merchants that must have accompanied the return of the fishing boats, transforming the riverbanks into an impromptu fish market. Beyond them rise the buildings of a village whose stepped gables recall the Flemish roots of Matthijs Schoevaerdts (1644-1702/1703), born in Brussels.

Through the precision of his brushwork and the wealth of anecdotal detail, the work perfectly illustrates the legacy of the Flemish tradition of narrative landscape painting. Schoevaerdts draws upon and adapts the models of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625), blending village figures, boats, and livestock in a composition that is both dynamic and meticulously structured. Men and women bustle around baskets overflowing with freshly caught fish, some already scattered on the ground; customers bargain, observe, or stroll about, while dogs play nearby, giving the whole scene a lively, fluid rhythm.
