A windmill and a cart drawn by four horses in the region of Jaslo ( Jaslo/ Jassel is situated in Galicia/Poland in the Carpathian foothills ), titled Jaslo on the reverse, signed and dated Rudolf Alt 1840, watercolour on paper, 12 x 18 cm, mounted, framed, damaged ( stained, browned, three repaired holes ), ( Hu )

In 1838 and 1839 Rudolf von Alt made his first journey to the monarchy’s eastern provinces Bohemia, Moravia and Galicia. He visited different castles and admired the beauty of Prague. In these years he also continued to work on his „Guckkastenbilder“ for which he was constantly searching, sketching and executing new motifs, including watercolours of Galician peasants and women in their national costumes. He also was particularly interested in the churches of Dukla, Neumarkt and Wadowice in Galicia. Between 1840 and 1843 H.F. Müller and his publishing house on Vienna’s Kohlmarkt published "Pittoreskes Österreich", an illustrated compilation of Austrian views. (Comp. Walter Koschatzky, Rudolf von Alt, Salzburg 1975, pp. 64, 67-71).
