Our opinion? They are both different in some sense and similar in others. (Oh yes we are sitting on the fence today).
- Carafes and decanters are different in shape: decanters are built with a long noose like top to allow decanted wine breath, carafes? Not necessarily so.
- Different in traditional usage: traditionally, both are used to serve drinks, but while decanters are used for serving wine, carafes are for example, used in serving juices, water and beverages.
