Andreas Achenbach, Achenbach older brother of the landscape painter Oswald, specialized after his training at the düsseldorf Academy under Schirmer, and Kolbe, followed by several study trips in the Netherlands, mainly on seascapes. These have in the early period is a dramatic image structure, determined by clouds, sea and light effects, while in the later development of a calming of the motifs and the colours of admission. Our painting depicts an atmospheric evening mood with numerous staffage figures, which illustrate the life of the fishermen with their families. While Achenbach is dedicated to the presentation of Nature as much attention as the characterization of the characters. It is clear that the painter, in spite of a more precise reproduction of reality and a naturalistic depiction of the Details, in implementing the philosophical stance of the düsseldorf school of painting. This focused on an idealistic, soul-wrenching image design, the Achenbach formulated here. Provenance: Southern German Private Collection.
