H. was one of the most important representatives of expressionism. He belonged to after a brief study of architecture in 1905, in addition to Schmidt-Rottluff, Kirchner & F. Bleyl of the founders of the 'Brücke' in Dresden. After numerous trips and longer in a Studio with Kirchner, he moved in 1911 in the art center of Berlin, where he helped with the expressionism to the international breakthrough. The First world war he lived through as a medic in Flanders, where he met M. Beckmann and J. Ensor. In the time of the Weimar Republic, he received numerous public and private commissions; already in 1931, his life's work was honored with a large exhibition. The national socialists destroyed a large number of his works; the artist withdrew to the lake of Constance. After the Second world war numerous exhibitions acknowledged & awards its meaning, among others, he exhibited in 1955 at the Documenta I. 1949 to 1955, under H. taught at the Karlsruhe Academy.
