Lithography, 24 x 23.5 cm, lower right in pencil HMPechstein signed, under Passepartout and glass framed. - German painter & graphic artist of the 'bridge', one of the most important expressionists. After training as a painter and studied p. to the industrial school & the Academy of Dresden, the last 1903-06 as master student of O. Gussmann. Already in 1906, he joined the artist group 'Brücke'. In the following year, a scholarship to Italy enabled him to travel & Paris. P. subsequently settled in Berlin, where he was a member of the Secession & the President of the New Secession, which led in 1912 to his exclusion from the 'bridge'. In 1918, he was one of the founding members of the 'November group'. The professorship at the Berlin Academy, which he had had since 1923, held, he was deprived in 1933 of the national socialists. In 1937, he was expelled from the Academy & many of his works in the exhibition 'degenerate art' is shown. He spent the internal exile, mostly in Pomerania. Already in 1945, P. was again a Professor at the Academy of arts in Berlin and received several honors & awards. His works have been exhibited in 1955, posthumously at the Documenta I.
