Oil/cardboard, 30 x 42 cm, verso estate stamp, inconspicuous retouches. - Important German Impressionist. H. received his first drawing lessons from G. Gensler. He studied first with J. Becker at the städel Museum in Frankfurt, from 1866, the K. Steffeck at the Academy in Berlin. Two years later, he moved to Ch to Weimar. Verlat, where he studied together with his friend M. Liebermann. With this he held in 1876/77 a joint Studio in Paris. According to a study in Munich in 1884 H. final in Hamburg, where he initially took a job as a drawing teacher. H. belonged in 1897, the founders of the Hamburg artists club, he left in 1903, due to recording of the students, A. screen list. H. took place in Paris, the Barbizon school & the circle around W. Leibl suggestions. He became the leading the North German impressionist, whose importance has been recognized because of its small exhibition activity only posthumously & appreciated.
