Lot 1133SALT CELLAR WITH NEPTUNE AND TELLUS (ACCORDING TO BENVENUTO CELLINI)
SALT cellar WITH NEPTUNE AND TELLUS (ACCORDING to BENVENUTO CELLINI) Hanau, Ludwig Neresheimer, around 1890, silver, partly gold-plated. L. 17 cm, h 15.5 cm, 2101 g. Hallmarked with Crescent, crown and manufacturer signet and fineness of '835'. Reproduction of the only extant goldsmith work of Benvenuto Cellini. It shows an allegorical representation of the planet earth: Neptune, God of the sea, worn to his feet a ship as a salt container, of four horse-like creature with horse body and fish tails, and Tellus, the Roman goddess of the earth. At her side was a temple building that was in the Original as a container for pepper. The figure of Neptune symbolizes the sea, the salt, whereas Tellus, the earth symbolizes that which makes the pepper thrive. The Base of the sculpture is divided into eight niches, in which allegories of the seasons on the one hand, and of the dawn, day, twilight and night on the other hand, are shown. Trident of Neptune is missing, rubbed; gilt part.
