This exquisite and large still life oil-on-canvas painting portrays an abundant range of food items carefully arranged on a table against a dark backdrop. At the center, a large fish rests on a red dish, surrounded by a brass container filled with white asparagus and leafy greens. To the left, a white pie sits near pieces of bread, an orange, and a knife, while to the right, a bowl of red berries is placed next to a tall goblet and a small group of fish and peeled shrimp as well as lemons and more herring.The central symbol in this painting being fish is considered a symbol of the origin of life in accordance with the traditional cosmogonic concepts of most peoples of the Earth; life originated from water.
