Los 5420 | A Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oakleaves of Rudolf Bacherer
A Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oakleaves of Rudolf Bacherer
Knights Cross of the Iron Cross of the firm Steinhauer & Lück, black finish core, silver frame of Type “A” with distinct die flaw features to this type, marked “800” on reverse, suspension ring marked “800”. Hand-made Oakleaves of silver finish stamped metal, attached to Knights Cross suspension ring with wire clips. Faded neck ribbon shortened to 46 cm for wear under collar, with finished ends. Cross and ribbon exhibit wear to finish and fading from regular use. Ribbon ends with holes from use of collar attachment pins/devices. Oakleaves are not presentation pieces and were hand-made while in captivity. They retain a bright finish but have soiling in recesses. Nice original and unique set worn through captivity.
Rudolf Gustav Moritz Bacherer (19 June 1895 – 6 July 1964) served in the German Heer during WWII, held several regimental commands and was recipient #550 of the Oakleaves to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. In June 1944 Bacherer was commanding the 1049th Infantry Regiment on the Western Front when Major General Rudolf Stegmann, commander of the 77th Infantry Division, was killed in an American air raid. Bacherer was promoted to command the division and enjoyed some early successes, taking 250 Americans prisoner on 17 June, and the following day broke through US lines to link up with the remnants of the LXXXIV Corps near La Haye-du-Puits. The Division however, which was already understrength when Bacherer made his advance, soon suffered heavy losses as the Americans forged ahead. Bacherer was captured by American forces following the fall of Saint-Malo in 1944 and was held as a POW until 1947. Bacherer was in captivity when awarded the Oakleaves and manufactured his own Oakleaves out of metal to wear with his Knights Cross.
