A PAIR OF GEORGE II EBONIZED AND PARCEL-GILT STOOLS

CIRCA 1740, POSSIBLY ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED AS STANDS

Each with a later drop-in rectangular seat upholstered in handwoven Bevilacqua silk velvet, over rails with applied Vitruvian scrolls, supported on canted molded C-scrolls with husk ornaments extending into curved legs with paw feet, the apron centered by an elephant's head, the sides with a scallop shell above pendant husks terminating in clasps of scrolled acanthus leaves, all supporting draped garlands of acorns and oak leaves, redecorated, with printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory label

22 1/4 in. (56.5 cm.) high, 25 1/2 in. (64.8 cm.) wide, 21 1/2 in. (54.6 cm.) deep

Almost certainly commissioned by Hugh, 14th Baron Clinton and 1st Earl Fortescue (d.1751) for Castle Hill, Devon and by descent to
