AETIUS AMIDENUS (fl. mid-5th - mid-6th century)
Librorum medicinalium tomus primus [all published], in Greek. Venice: heirs of Aldo Manuzio and heirs of Andrea Asulanus, September, 1534.
Greek editio princeps of the first half of the Tetrabiblion, the second half of which has never been published. Little is known of Aetius of Amida, the Byzantine physician best known in the Renaissance for collecting the works of other writers which might otherwise have been forgotten. Although Aetius' originality was questioned by early readers, among them the Byzantine scholar Photius, this part of the Tetrabiblion contains original research on the treatment of aneurysm. Adams A305; Censimento 16 CNCE 418; Renouard 1534:7; UCLA 238; Garrison-Morton 33; Durling 43.

Folio (305 x 205mm). Greek text, woodcut Aldine device on title and verso of final leaf, a few early marginal annotations in red ink (recto of title and verso of colophon leaf slightly soiled and with a few small holes, a few marginal ink smudges in text). 19th-century blindstamped calf (rebacked and rather rubbed, old tape adhesion and paper shelf mark at head of spine). Provenance: Royal Society of Medicine (purple library ink stamp to title, preliminary leaf, first text leaf, and final two leaves [Royal Medical & Chirurgical Society 9 Nov 1887]).
