AGASSIZ, Louis (1807-1873)

Etudes sur les Glaciers. Neuchâtel and Solothurn: for the author by Jent and Gassmann, 1840.

Complete first edition of this milestone in the study of glaciation, studying the development, formation, movement and effect of glaciers. Agassiz believed there to have been a great fall in the world's temperature causing a great ice sheet across much of Northern Europe and he named this period the 'Ice Age'. His work had a great influence on Lyell and Darwin. Horblit 1; Norman 17; PMM 309.

2 volumes, octavo text vol. (242 x 152mm) and folio atlas (491 x 341mm). Text vol.: errata leaf at end (without half title, occasional spotting mostly confined to margins); atlas: 18 lithographic plates by Nicolet after Bettannier with 14 printed overlay outline key plates (as issued, plates and overlays with dampstains mainly confined to corners but sometimes into printed area, first overlay with tear across plate with tape repair to verso with some very minor loss, 5cm tear to 2nd overlay, but without loss). A made-up set with text bound in contemporary half polished calf (extremities lightly rubbed), atlas bound in contemporary boards with original lithographic front wrapper bound in (rebacked with calf spine, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Gawdy Hall Library (booklabel in text vol.) – Clifton Hall Association, Mercantile Library, New York (stamps to plates and overlays).
