Large 4to (292 x 235mm.), 58 PLATINUM PRINTS (from 100 x 120mm. to 195 x 150mm.), mounted on thick card, recto only, mounted on guards, contemporary dark green morocco, upper cover titled in gilt 'Cape Colony & Madeira 1888-89', gilt edges, some spotting and dust-staining to mounts, binding rubbed

A good album of views of a voyage to the Cape Colony, South Africa in 1888-89. The photographs show passengers on the Norham Castle, views of Cape Town, Coghill's Hotel (Wynberg), Sir Hercules Robinson's house at Rondesbosch, a government farm at Constantia, views of the church and town of Wynberg, the Botanical Gardens and Table Mountain, the Naval station at Simon's Bay from Kalk Bay, at the summit of Table Mountain, scenes at Captain Middlemas's house, portraits of staff (cook, washerwoman, and cook), views at Ceres, including Rockland Farm and the Thom family, views of St Helena, a turtle from Ascension, Funchal Bay and views of Madeira including the market, harbour and oxen transport, basket chair making at Camacho, hammock bearers at Cardwell's hotel, and a group photograph of Matabele Chiefs envoys to Queen Victoria.

The voyage out was on the R.M.S. Norham Castle from London to Madeira, via Dartmouth, Lisbon, Cape Town, St Helena, and Ascension; this was followed by a return voyage on the R.M.S. Garth Castle from Madeira to Plymouth, via Lisbon. The outward voyage left London on 24 October 1888 and arrived in Madeira around 20 March 1889. The return voyage left Madeira on 11 April and arrived in Plymouth on 15 April 1889.
