Group of seven children's books. Philadelphia and New York, 1808-1828.

Early American children's books, an association set from the collection of A.E. Newton. The great bookseller A.S.W. Rosenbach (1876-1952) was the author the key bibliography, Early American Children's Books (1933), with a foreword by the renowned collector, A. Edward Newton (1864-1940). The Rosenbach Company sold boxed assemblages of early American children's books. The present set is one of these which belonged to Rosenbach's collaborator, A.E. Newton. The volumes comprise:

1. ABC BOOK – The Uncle's Present. A New Battledoor. Philadelphia: Jacob Johnson and sold by Benjamin Warner, c.1810. Engraved illustrations for the letters of the alphabet. Folding title flap, woodcut covers.
2. The Daisy; or, Cautionary Stories in Verse. Philadelphia: Jacob Jonson, 1808. Misimposed as usual. Orange wrappers.
3. Think Before You Speak; or The Three Wishes. Philadelphia: Johnson & Warner, n.d. (Covers detached).
4. The American Primer. Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1813. (Chips to wrappers, some tape.)
5. Village Annals. Containing Austerus and Humanus. Philadelphia: Johnson & Warner, 1814. Marbled wrappers (backstrip perished, taped). "Hobby-horse" bookplate of A.E. Newton.
6. The New-York Preceptor; or, Third Book. New York: Samuel Wood, n.d. "Hobby-horse" bookplate of A.E. Newton.
7. M'Carty's American Primer. Philadelphia: M'Carty & Davis, n.d.

Together, seven volumes. 12mo or 16mo. Illustrated. Original wrappers. (Condition varies, overall very good.) Housed in early 20th century slipcase. Provenance: A.E. Newton (bookplate to slipcase).
