Los 41 | Anselme's royal genealogy of France

Père Anselme’s classic work on the royal genealogy of France, bound in red morocco by Simier for King Louis Philippe. Third edition, one volume (of nine) only (vol. 3, “Suite des pairs de France”). Père Anselme, also known as Anselme de Guibours, was a French Discalced Augustinian friar and noted genealogist. His early publications included Le Palais de l’honneur (1663), focusing on the genealogy of the houses of Lorraine and Savoy while also serving as a complete treatise on heraldry, and Le Palais de la gloire (1664), on the genealogy of various illustrious French and European families. The first edition of Père Anselme’s magnum opus, Histoire généalogique et chronologique de la maison royale de France, appeared in 1674. It is a genealogical and chronological history of the royal house of France, of the peers of France, of the great officers of the Kingdom of France, of the king’s household, and of the ancient barons of the kingdom. The work was popular and highly regarded, as it made use of archival documents, references to which are usually given. Expanded editions were issued several years after Père Anselm’s death, in 1712 and again in 1726-33 (the present edition). The work of Père Anselm and his collaborators and successors is even more important for the history of France than is William Dugdale’s Baronage of England for the history of England.

One volume (of nine) only, folio (358 x 227mm). Many coats of arms in text, mostly hand-colored by the Queen and seven other courtiers; presentation certificate to the King bound in. Red morocco gilt by Simier, doublures, moiré silk endpapers, all edges gilt, with arms of King Louis Philippe (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Louis Philippe I (1773-1850; binding and Neuilly library ownership stamp on title) – Bibliothèque de S.A.R. Monseigneur le Duc de Vendôme (probably Prince Emmanuel of Orléans, Duc de Vendôme, 1872-1931; bookplate) – Pierre-Édouard-Guislain, Baron de Mouveaux, Flamand (bookplate).
