BARTHOLOMAEUS PISANUS (d. 1401)

[Liber conformitatum:] Opus auree. Edited by Joannes Maria Mapellus. Milan: Zanoto da Castiglione, 18 August, 1513.

[Bound with:] CLICHTOVEUS, Jodocus (1472/3-1543). Elucidatorium ecclesiasticum. Paris: Henri Estienne, 1516.

Second edition of a controversial text, drawing parallels between Christ and St Francis that provoked Protestant attack. The correspondences between their lives are set out in graphic form in the woodcut Arbor Conformitatum, a tree hung with placards containing letterpress text. It was the original (1510) of this woodcut that was interpreted as exemplifying idolatry of St Francis; the second edition contains all new woodcuts and the Arbor has been slightly modified to reduce the figure of Francis. It is bound with an imperfect copy of the first edition of Clichtove’s explication of liturgical texts for use by the secular clergy. Cf. Mortimer, Harvard Italian, I, 44 (1510 edition). Sander 205.

Two works in one volume, folio (297 x 208mm). First work: without final blank, printed in red and black, title with large woodcut of Christ and St Francis each carrying a cross and multipart border, woodcut of hands of the two men nailed to the cross opening each of the 3 books, multipart border opening text, full-page woodcut of the Arbor Conformitatum, decorative and historiated initials, printer’s device at end; second work: woodcut decorative initials (light wormtracks in first quire just into title text and border, occasional faint marginal dampstain, a little marginal staining at beginning and end of the volume, Clichtove lacking final 11 leaves, second leaf just frayed at upper margin). Contemporary black goatskin tooled with rolls to a saltire design, remains of 2 fore-edge clasps fastening on lower cover, evidence of chain staple on upper cover (scuffed, some wear predominantly at spine with loss of leather at foot); modern folding box. Provenance: p.o4r partly censored – unlocalised Capuchin house (faded title inscription).
