BINDING
Renaissance sunk-panel binding made for a Commissione Dogale issued for or under the Mocenigo family. [Venice: c.1570-90s].
This is an example of the Persian-style sunk-compartment bindings that were used on Venetian commissione and dogali from around 1570 until after 1699. The present binding resembles those reproduced in De Marinis II, 1917 e-f dating from 1583, 1585 and 1597. Commissioni and Dogali - letter of appointment with the relevant laws and duties - were issued in the name of the Doge of Venice to officials appointed by the state. Typically the lion of St. Mark is on the upper cover and the arms of the recipient is on the lower cover. The arms on the present binding are of the Mocenigo family, and many dogali were issued by Alvise 1 Mocenigo (Doge 1570-77). Here the manuscript has been added later and its contents are unrelated to an appointment.

Quarto (235 x 176mm). Brown leather over wood, sunk-panel design painted with gilt-lacquered decoration, central compartment of upper cover with the lion of St. Mark and the lower cover with the Mocenigo arms, spine in 5 compartments with painted decoration over gilt lacquer, fore-and lower edges later gilt (some wear, minor restorations and repairs); a remboitage containing a 17th-century manuscript on paper in Italian dated 1617-1632, a commonplace book by ?Giorgio Fiacchi, started on 1 January 1611 (Libro di diverse memorie, conti, e copie di l[ette]re, e scritture [trimmed with some loss of text]).
Sold as a binding, not subject to return.
