Kreüterbuch, darin Underscheid Würckung und Namen der Kreüter so in Deutschen Landen wachsen. Strasbourg: Wendel Rihel, 1 April 1546.
First illustrated edition of a revolutionary botanical work; Bock's systematic and detailed descriptions of plants grouped into trees, shrubs and herbs led eventually to a full classification system, realised by Linnaeus. His ‘descriptions of flowers were remarkably clear...and they indicated that he comprehended things by which his predecessors had been completely baffled. He recognized the corolla, stamens, and pistils as essential parts of many flowers, and he is probably the first botanist of the 16th century to feel the necessity for some sort of classification’ (Hunt I, 66 [1560 Latin edition]). Moreover, he treated the entire life cycle of plants instead of being limited only to the period of their flowering. Blunt and Raphael, pp. 129-132; Hunt 66 (1560 Latin edition); Nissen BBI 182; Stafleu & Cowan TL 2, 575; VD-16 B-6016.
Two (of three) parts in one volume, folio (318 x 207mm). With both blanks (e4, NN6), but without part 3. Extensively illustrated with woodcuts by David Kandel finely coloured by an early hand (occasional light spotting, staining or light browning). Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, sides panelled with roll tools, title lettered in ink on front cover, remains of two fore-edge catches (without clasps, lightly rubbed and soiled). Provenance: title inscription – Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen (founded by Duke Bernhard I [1649-1706]: library stamp on title verso) – Albert John Chalmers (British colonial physician and pioneer in tropical medicine research, 1870-1920; bookplate and plate recording bequest from Mrs Chalmers in the year of his death, to:) – Royal Society of Medicine (ink stamps).
