[BUSCH, Johannes (1399/1400-after 1475)]

Speculum exemplorum. Deventer: Richardus Pafraet, 2 May 1481.

First edition, printed at the first press at Deventer, of moralising tales compiled from various sources, including the Vitae Patrum of St. Jerome and Dialogues of Pope Gregory. Section 10 is of especial importance as containing tales known to the compiler only from oral sources. The localisation of this oral tradition to northern Netherlands supports the identification of the compiler as Johannes Busch (1399/1400-after 1475) instead of the earlier attribution to Aegidius Aurifaber. Busch was a proponent of the Devotio Moderna and member of the house at Windesheim, the centre of the movement. The work opens with praise of the invention of printing and the dissemination of books throughout the world. HC 14915; BMC IX, 43; Camp-Kron 1568; ILC 2005; Brussels exhib.1973, cat. 141; CIBN S-344; Bod-inc S-264; Goff S-651; ISTC is00651000; not in BSB.

Chancery folio (287 x 204mm). 503 leaves. Initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red, evidence of earlier index tabs (occasional spotting, A1.8 and h1.8 reinforced at hinge). 19th-century calf-backed boards, gilt spine (slightly rubbed). Provenance: some contemporary and slightly later annotations – Maastricht, Lichtenberg convent of Observant Franciscans (early ‘Ex bibliotheca montis lucis’ flyleaf inscription) – The Hague, Royal Library (stamp and duplicate cancel stamp) – John Vertue, first Bishop of Portsmouth (1826-1900; bookplate) – Stonyhurst College (sold Sotheby’s, 18 June 2003).
