CAMPO, Antonio (d.ca. 1591)
Cremona fedelissima citta. Cremona: Ippolito Tromba and Ercoliano Bartoli for the author, 1585.
First edition of this important history of Cremona. The portraits are principally of the dukes of Cremona and the dukes and duchesses of Milan, and many of the accompanying letterpress descriptions include a note as to the source of the image, including on page 104 a now lost portrait of Massimiliano of Milan by Leonardo da Vinci, then in the home of Francesco Melcio ‘gentil'huomo Milanese’.

The engravings by Carracci include the chariot and the portraits taken from models in Paolo Giovio's museum (Bohlin, Prints and Drawings by the Carracci family, 1979, nos. 56-92). The colophon, dedication and Campo's address to the Consiglieri are all dated 1585, however the printed date on the title-page was originally engraved as 1582 and then presumably altered on the plate to 1585, but the change has made the last figure illegible.

The present copy has the corrected state of the city map with the signature of the engraver changed to ‘Dauid de Laude Crem. Hebreus/incid’, and the address to the Consiglieri in 56 lines (replacing the original 61 lines; leaf †3 a cancel). The second portrait of Philip II on leaf O4v shows the king wearing a hat, which ‘is copied from a portrait by Juan Pantoja de la Cruz now in the Prado’ (Mortimer); some copies include an imperfectly masked re-print repeat of the portrait of Philip II which appears on the verso of the title. Adams C-489; Brunet I, 1526: "fort rare ... les curieux le recherchent surtout ' cause des gravures d'Augustin Carrache dont elle est ornie"; Cicognara 3977; Mortimer, Italian 100.

Folio (407 x 258mm). Engraved allegorical title with portrait of Philip II and coats of arms on verso, full-page engraved allegorical personification of the city of Cremona, folding engraved map of Cremona on 3 joined sheets, double-page map of the region around Cremona, double-page plate of the cathedral of Cremona with a view and a plan of the baptistery printed on the recto of the first sheet and a view and plan of the tower on the verso of the second sheet, engraved medallion portrait of the author and 33 other portraits in the text, of which 32 engraved and one woodcut, half-page engraving of a ‘carroccio’ proceeding from the gates of Cremona (B3r), text within ornamental woodcut borders, large woodcut initials (a little light scattered spotting, map with slight tears along centre fold). 18th century mottled calf, sides with triple gilt filet border and small floral cornerpieces, flat spine gilt, red and green morocco lettering pieces, gilt edges (joints split, spine ends slightly worn, extremities rubbed). Provenance: ‘Vincenti Marchio’, inscription on title – Doria family, counts of Montaldeo, engraved armorial bookplate of ‘Johannis Caroli de Auria ex comitibus Montis Aldei’ – by descent.
