While the oval shaped cases of Cartier watches began as early as 1912, it wasn't until 1954 that the iconic 'Baignoire' wristwatch was born, although not officially christened by this name until 1973. French for bathtub, the elongated oval shape became an instant favorite of both Cartier's jewelry and watch clientele. Most recently, Christie's was honored to sell a late 1960s example from the collection of Gloria, late Dowager Countess Bathurst.
