CICERO, Marcus Tullius (106-43 B.C.E.)

Philippicae. London: Richard Pynson, 1521 [Bound with:] APHTHONIUS, Sophista (4th century C.E.). Praeexercitamenta Fabula. London: Richard Pynson, 1520.

First editions printed in England of two classical texts, finely printed by Richard Pynson. Both of these early English editions designed for students in a pocket form are extremely rare. ESTC records 3 copies of the first (British Library (2) Cambridge) and 2 copies of the second (BL and Cambridge). Pynson, the King’s Printer, initially focused on law books, but he was also one of the first English printers to publish Classical texts. The common ownership inscriptions indicate that these works were first acquired at the same time, and have been together ever since. 1) ESTC S112531; STC 5311. Lowndes 462. 2) ESTC S110865; STC 699; Lowndes 55.

Two works in one, octavo (157 x 109mm). First title within elaborate woodcut architectural border (McKerrow & Ferguson 9a) variant of the same border, with Pynson’s device in shield, on verso of final leaf, 9-line, initials, title of second work within woodcut border [McKerrow & Ferguson 1], initials (light occasional dampstaining). Modern limp vellum (a little soiled). Provenance: Johannes May (contemporary Latin autograph on title) – James Dodwell (early autograph on title) -- title verso with early ink drawing on of two-headed man (Janus?) in a hat, a creature emanating from one mouth, and contemporary acquisition notes ('hunc sibi librum vendicat dominus chwach vice veri possessoris' [Mr Chwach claims this book for himself instead of the real owner]), pen drawing of Dodwell on verso of second title) – Latin and English notes on verso of final leaf.
