Los 106 | Complete Map of the Great Qing with All Under Heaven Unified
Schätzwert
$ 10 000 – 15 000
[After ZHU, Xiling (fl. 19th century)]. Daqing Yitong Tianxia Quantu [Complete Map of the Great Qing with All under Heaven Unified]. China, Daoguang period, 1839 [but a Guangxu period (1874-1908) reprint].

Rare monochromatic simplified version of Huang Qianren's iconic world map. In 1818, Zhu Xiling (fl. 19th century) modified Huang Qianren’s 1767 Daqing Wannian Yitong Tianxia Quantu (Complete Map of the Everlasting Great Qing with All under Heaven Unified; see lots 94 and 95) and entitled it Daqing Yitong Tianxia Quantu (Complete Map of the Great Qing with All Under Heaven Unified). This in turn was modified in 1839, with the present lot preserving the basic composition of Zhu Xiling’s map but simplifying some details, especially in the northwestern territories.

At the lower right corner, a cartouche is printed containing a succinct textual introduction of the map (abstract from Huang Qianren’s map) and a cartographical guide. The cartouche also states that the present lot was reprinted in “the seventh month of the ninth year of Daoguang’s reign (1839)” based on a woodcut block in the collection of Liu Ji Tang located at the foot of Mount Tai. The map is bounded to the north by Russia and to the west by Tibet. Netherlands, England, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea are seen at the upper left corner as small lands or circular shapes. The map is meticulously annotated with place names and various interesting details including the Great Wall and frontier fortresses along the north.

Woodblock map of China, ink printed on paper, 1020 x 605 mm, mounted with yellow silk borders to 1250 x 710 mm. Text in Chinese, containing place names, commentaries of foreign countries and a guide of cartographical symbols. (Some scattered wormholes with small losses, mostly along two previous folds, light surface abrasions / staining, laid down to modern backing).

Exhibited: "The World on Paper: From Square to Sphericity," Hong Kong Maritime Museum, December 2019 to March 2020.
