Los 120 | Don Quixote
CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de (1547-1616). [The History of Don Quichote. The First Parte.] – The Second Part of the History of ... Don Quixote. Translated by Thomas Shelton. London: [Eliot Court Press for] Edward Blount, [1620] and 1620.

First full edition in English, comprising the second edition of the first part and the first edition of the second part, as often. This copy with contemporary ownership signature of Richard Ligon. Don Quixote won immediate fame when first printed in 1605. For its influence, innovation and critical status, it is "to Spanish literature what Shakespeare is to English" (Bloom) and has become globally regarded as "one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times" (PMM). Part one first appeared in English in 1612, and was reissued in 1620 along with the first edition of the second part. Grolier Langland to Wither 213; Pforzheimer 140; STC S107641 and S107642.

Two volumes, quarto (170 x 128mm and 167 x 122mm). Engraved title in part one supplied in old facsimile of the first edition, letterpress title in part two, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, woodcut initials (without part one title or blank leaves, pale browning, a few minor stains; vol 1 first few leaves and about 3 in middle with light edge-chipping, catchwords and signature marks shaved, a few minor stains, tiny rust-hole to V1, Bb3 shaved through the last line of text on verso, marginal tear to M3-M7; vol 2 headlines occasionally shaved, staining in L gathering, tiny rust hole to Z3, part 2 without the additional engraved title which is present in some copies). Old speckled calf (part one, rubbed, rebacked, lower cover detached) and modern quarter calf (part two). Provenance: Richard Ligon [possibly the author Richard Ligon, c.1585-1662, bankrupted plantation owner and chronicler of mid-17th century Barbados] (contemporary ownership inscription to p. 1 of first part).
