DOYLE, Arthur Conan (1859-1930)

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, 1892.

The first collection of Sherlock Holmes stories in the vanishingly rare dust-jacket: first edition, first impression in a second state dust-jacket with ‘Southampton Street’ appearing on the street sign. We are unable to trace any copy in the second state dust-jacket at auction and are aware of just one other in private hands. No copy in any state of the jacket has appeared at auction since the Manney copy sold in 1991 ($53,900).

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes followed closely upon the phenomenal success of the series in the Strand Magazine. ‘Rarely has a character so quickly established itself on the popular imagination as did Sherlock Holmes in the latter half of 1891’ (Green & Gibson). A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone of Detective Fiction. Green & Gibson A10a; cf. Pepper and Stern Rare Books, Selections from the Sherlock Holmes collection of Dr. James Bliss Austin (1990), no.84.

Royal octavo. With the misprint Miss ‘Violent’ Hunter for ‘Violet’ in the final sentence of ‘The Copper Beeches’ (p.317), illustrations in the text by Sidney Paget (occasional spotting). Original light blue cloth over heavy bevelled boards, with the blank street sign on the upper cover, lettered and decorated on spine and upper board in gilt and black, edges gilt, with the later issue yellow-brown peacock spray endpapers (a couple of small marks to cloth, faint rubbing at spine ends, minor splitting at hinges); pictorial dust-jacket blocked and titled as on upper cover but with ‘Southampton Street’ appearing on the street sign, publisher’s advertisements on lower panel (the whole laid on card, rubbed and somewhat soiled, spine faded, chips to spine ends, corners and to upper edge of lower panel with loss of some text at foot of spine, small hole with loss of a few letters on lower panel, a few short closed tears, long tear to upper joint with crude partial tape repair).
