Los 10 | Exercice spirituel
PADELOUP, Antoine (d. 1665), bookbinder – [BALLESDENS, Jean (1595-1675), and Pierre ROCOLET (d. 1662).] Exercice spirituel, ou Le Chrestien peut apprendre la manière d’employer le jour au service de dieu. Paris: P. Rocolet, 1648.

Prayer book with fine hand-colored engravings, in a lovely fanfare binding by Antoine Padeloup. According to Cioranescu, this popular book of spiritual exercises was first issued in 1645 and revised and republished several times through the 18th century. The author(s), whose initials “V.C.P.” appear on the title-page, have not been identified, but the two epistles to la chancelière Madame Séguier are signed by Jean Ballesdens and Pierre Rocolet, also the printer. Rocolet, a printer and bookseller working in Paris from 1618 until his death in 1662, was appointed imprimeur ordinaire du roi in 1635 and eventually imprimeur de la ville de Paris. He was succeeded by his son-in-law Daniel Foucault, who printed later editions of this work in the 1660s. According to Fletcher, “Pierre Rocolet was a bookseller and publisher, and the bindings attached to his name are the work of several master bookbinders whose skills he engaged.” This copy was bound by the master bookbinder Antoine Padeloup (d. 1665). Cioranescu 9383. See Fletcher, French Book Arts (Grolier Club, 2018), pp. 72-73.

Octavo (178 x 120mm). Title with engraved vignette of the Annunciation, frontispiece, and seven engravings, vividly hand-colored and heightened in gold; some woodcut head- and tail-pieces and historiated initials also hand-colored and heighted in gold (occasional light spotting, a few dampstains). Contemporary brown morocco gilt à la fanfare with elaborate pointillé floral tooling by Padeloup, gauffered edges, clasps, and silk ribbon bookmark (clasps defective, light wear). Provenance: Hans Fürstenberg (1890-1982, German-French banker; bookplate).
