[FLORA DANICA] – OEDER, Georg Christian (1728-1791), and others.

Icones plantarum sponte nascentium in regnis Daniae et Norwegiae, in ducatibus Slesvici et Holsatiae, et in comitatibus Oldenburgi et Delmenhorstiae. Copenhagen: N. Möller, 1761-1883.

A complete set of this great European flora, published over a 125-year period. One of the most ambitious botanical publications of its age, Flora Danica is the most comprehensive illustrated survey of the wild plants of Denmark and its adjacent regions, from the far side of the Elbe to the Arctic Sea. Its 3240 plates include flowers, grasses and fungi, with Nissen praising the engraved illustrations as the best in their field, combining precise scientific accuracy with great aesthetic merit. Dunthorne calls it 'superbly coloured, mostly very minute and accurate, colouring sufficiently opaque to conceal engraved lines.' Publication began in 1761 with three fascicles to the volume, volume I reaching completion in 1764 [dated 1766]; the three supplements appeared in 1853, 1865 and 1874. The early plates were designed by Martin Rössler (fascs. 1-11) and Friderik Müller (fascs. 11-21), and engraved on fine Honig paper. Dunthorne 218; Great Flower Books (1990) p.124; Hunt 594; Nissen BBI 2249; Pritzel 6799; Stafleu and Cowan 7001 and 7008.

18 vols, including Liebmann & Lange's Supplement, folio (366 x 237mm), and 1 vol. quarto, Lange's Index (260 x 205mm). 3060 + 180 handcoloured or colour-printed plates (a few cropped, a few minor stains). Vols 1-6 bound in contemporary calf, the remainder of the set bound to match in old half calf (rebacked). Provenance: Massachusetts Horticultural Society (bookplates and stamps to plates; sold Sotheby Parke Bernet 1 October 1980 lot 117).
