GOEDAERT, Johannes (1617-1668)

Johannes Godartius of Insects. Done into English, and Methodized. London: John White, for Martin Lister, 1682.

Very rare, first edition of Lister’s translation of Johannes Godeart’s works on insects. One of only 150 copies printed at Lister’s own expense. Auction records list only one other copy sold in the last 100 years (in 1934). ESTC R014347; Hagen I, p.288; Lisney 45; Nissen ZBI 1605; Wing G1003.

Small quarto (192 x 147mm). Title in red and black, list of plates and contents in manuscript by a later hand, 14 engraved plates, 12 folding (lacking T3a errata leaf and T3b blank, very occasional spotting, first leaf with small hole affecting a few letters of manuscript contents page, text block trimmed with K3 and T2 affected, resulting in some textual loss to collation, last line of letterpress and catch word). Contemporary brown mottled calf, covers with borders stamped in blind, gilt spine with gilt lettered label, gilt turn-ins, red speckled edges (extremities lightly rubbed, most heavily affecting spine). Provenance: T. J. Dillon (bookplate).
