HERBAL

Herbolario volgare. Venice: Giovanni Andrea Valvassori and brothers, 27 July 1534.

First issue of this Italian vernacular edition of the Latin Herbarius; another issue appeared on 15 November of the same year. This edition has a new set of woodcuts based on the cuts of the Hortus Sanitatis. ’The Herbarius … was anonymous, a compilation from medieval writers and from certain classical and Arabian authors, the latter doubtless quoted from translations… It was intended to treat of cheap and homely remedies for the use of the poor, such as could be found in the woods and meadows’ (Hunt). This edition has a new vernacular translation, with linguistic elements typical of Northern Italian dialects, especially those around Venice. There are two changes here to the first Italian edition (1522); chapter 89 is here devoted to honey and a new chapter numbered 151 has been added on wine and vinegar, both illustrated with new cuts. CNCE 22579; Hunt, 34; Klebs, 16; Nissen, BBI 34.

Collation: aa6, A-X8, Y6 (aa 2.5 and 3.4 reversed in binding, Y3.4 misbound after aa3) near full-page woodcut of Saints Cosmas and Damian on title, full-page woodcut of Virgin and Child, 151 large woodcuts, woodcut printer’s device on final recto (tiny wormholes in title and first two leaves, small wormhole in final 4 leaves. just touching a few letters, marginal tear in Y5) Contemporary sheep over thin pasteboard tooled silver and in blind to a panel design, title lettered on upper cover, outer panel with silver-gilt floral scroll, central panel with silver-gilt corner-pieces, crowns above and below a central medallion, edges gilt and gauffered (rebacked, upper corners chipped, very minor worming).
