Origin: Tibet.
Date: First 3rd 20th century.
Technique: Colours and gold on fabric. Hanging scroll with silk fabrics and curtain. Bronze knobs with residues of gilding.
Description: On a tree, grouped in a traditional manner, Lamas, Siddhas and the deities of the Gelugpa school are placed around Tsonghkapa. The founder oft the school can be recognised by the sword and book on lotus blossoms at his shoulders. He is holding an alms bowl and Shakyamuni appears on his chest in front of a mandorla.
In the right top corner, Amithaba is enthroned inside the palace oft the Western Paradise. The left side shows Maitreya with Atisha and Tsongkhapa. The donor is depicted on the right bottom corner in front of a table filled with offerings.
An unusually large thangka with numerous figures in fine painting. The dark blue tone of the sky was painted with precious lapis lazuli, many of the figures and details were enhanced with gold leaf
.
Measurement: Painting 87,5 x 62,5cm, 154 x 106cm.
Provenance:
-Collection Prof. Dr. Manfred Kulessa, Bonn. Purchased on a journey on which he accompanied Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker 1969 to Delhi.
