( Abbeville 1726-1788 Paris ) and Jacques Philippe Le Bas ( Paris 1707-1783 )
Two engravings after drawings by Jean-Denis Attiret ( Dole 1702-1768 Beijing ), representing the conquests of the Chinese Emperor Quianlong ( 1711-1799 ): 1. The conquest of Arcul, inscribed "Js. Dios. Attiret Soc. Jesu, del. 1765, C. N. Cochin filius Dirrex. / J. Aliamet Sculp." in the plate, 58 x 93,8 cm; 2. The victory of Khorgos, inscribed "Grave par J. P. Le Bas Graveur du Cabinet du Roi en 1774" in the plate, 57 x 92,5 cm, each with narrow margins along platemarks, unmounted, unframed, ( 2 ), ( Sch )

After the Chinese Emperor Quianlong (1711-1799) had seen engravings made after battle paintings by Georg Philipp Rugendas (1666-1742), he was inspired to have a similar series of engravings executed which should commemorate his victorious military campaigns. He commissioned sixteen engravings, which he intended to show in the entrance hall of his palace in Beijing. The drawings for the series were done by Jesuit missionary artists employed at that time at the Chinese court. The drawings were then sent to France. In Paris they were translated into engravings by eight artists from the Académie royale at the court of Louis XVI., including Le Bas, Aliamet, Prevos, Saint-Aubin, Masquelier, Choffard and De Launay. The project was supervised by Charles-Nicolas Cochin. The series of engravings, and among them the two prints presented in this auction, are excellent examples of how European and Chinese esthetics came to a synthesis by using traditional European artistic means.
