Jan Voss (1936 Hamburg) (F)
'Sehr wilde Ehen', oil on canvas, 73 cm x 116 cm, signed, dated 73, titled on the reverse, partially stain-spotted, with purchase receipt, provenance: Private collection, Hanover ''What counts is that the unexpected has a chance and surprise can arise. This must not be killed off under any circumstances by repeating what one has already found elsewhere and, instead of inventing, pretending to already know.'' Jan Voss Born in Hamburg, the artist Jan Voss studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Munich from 1956 to 1960. He was awarded a scholarship and moved to Paris in 1960, then the main artistic centre of Europe. It was like a new beginning for Voss - impressed by his experiences in the French capital, he gradually began to incorporate coloured ink into his delicate ink line drawings. Jan Voss' paintings seem to be arranged by chance. This spontaneity arises because he does not use any preliminary drawings or sketches, but simply lets the elements slowly develop on the canvas. He participated in the documenta 4 in Kassel 1968, but his American colleagues attracted more attention. Voss later began to experiment with various materials, making collages and reliefs. Based on these collages he then began to create sculptures in the 1980s that reflect the three-dimensional qualities of his paintings. Jan Voss' works can be colourful and powerful as well as delicate and graphic. Torn watercolours, paper collage reliefs or colourful woodwork are juxtaposed with quiet, narrative elements. His principal theme, however, remains ''order'' and its constant disruption by the chaos in our environment and society. The painting ''Sehr wilde ehen'' (Very wild marriages) from 1973 reflects a point in Voss' oeuvre in which his light ink drawings had taken on colour. It depicts apparently randomly arranged forms, that nevertheless appear precisely balanced. This ''ordered chaos'' accurately reflects the complexity of a marriage. The basis of this is the harmonious framework, here illustrated by the homogeneous and soothing sage green background, upon which all the trivial, daily challenges are superimposed. A perfect interplay of harmony and disharmony. Jan Voss has lived and worked in France since 1960, where he is one of the outstanding contemporary artistic personalities of our times.
