From 1771 onwards he was active as first court painter in Zweibrücken. In 1799 he became a court painter of Maximilian in Munich and director general of all painting galleries. Mannlich began his career as a rococo artist but became a classicist painter when he had studied works by Raffael and Mengs in Italy.
