Further details

JOHN FERNELEY SR. (1782-1860), SIR HARRY GOODRICKE, MASTER OF THE QUORN, ON HIS HUNTER DR. RUSSELL, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED, INSCRIBED AND DATED

Together with John Frederick Herring Senior (1795-1865), John Ferneley (1782-1860) was one of the greatest animal painters of the early nineteenth century. It was John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (1778-1857), a renowned breeder of racing thoroughbreds, who first encouraged him to begin a career as an artist, and Ferneley soon became a much sought-after painter with the beau-monde. The likes of Beau Brummel (1778-1840), the great pioneer of British dandyism, and the Comte d'Orsay (1748-1809), a French financier and art collector, were among his patrons. However, his talents were most in demand with the hunting elite, especially the members of the three most famous British hunts, the Belvoir, the Cottesmore and the Quorn, of which Sir Harry Goodricke (1797-1833), shown here on his favourite horse, the brown bay stallion Dr. Russell, was master between 1831 and 1833.
