WILLIAM JACKSON HOOKER'S OWN COPY of the privately published first edition of the volume describing his expedition to Iceland—Hooker's first outside Britain, undertaken at the age of nineteen.

Hooker's notes and specimens from this expedition were unfortunately all destroyed by fire, though he was nevertheless able to write this account with the help of notes made by Sir Joseph Banks on an earlier expedition. Hooker's journal entries within the text pay much attention to the beautiful and exotic flora of the country, reflecting his academic training as a botanist. The scope of his lengthy introduction is broader, however, paying particular attention to political structures, religious institutions, and the organisation of schools and hospitals, as well as including detailed tables of expenditure.
