JONAS, Justus (1493-1555). Autograph manuscript signed ("Justus Jonas"), Naumberg, 1536.

112 x 128mm (small loss at left margin, light scattered foxing).

Verbum Domini manet in aeternum.

A rare manuscript from the German religious Reformer and legal scholar, boldly headed in Latin: "The word of the Lord endures forever," the phrase widely described as the motto of the German reformation. The balance reads: "To the honorable and wise council of Naumburg, my especially dear lords and friends / Justus Jonas, with my own hand." Jonas took over the rectory of Naumburg between 27 April and 8 September 1536, which initially involved him in disputes with the bishop and with Catholic adherents, although he ultimately succeeded in carrying through the Reformation in the town. A colleague of Martin Luther, Jonas played a prominent role in the early Reformation conferences, particularly at Marburg in 1529 and at Augsburg in 1530, where he helped draft the Augsburg Confession, a fundamental statement of Lutheran belief. He is perhaps best known for his German translations of the Latin writings of Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. Also an admirer of Erasmus, after becoming rector of the University of Erfurt in 1519 he introduced Greek and Hebrew into the curriculum. This manuscript was likely gathered as part of a Stammbuch; the verso includes an unidentified, later inscription.
