Cours d'hippiatrique, ou traité complet de la médecine des chevaux. Paris: Seneuze for Edme and the author, 1772.
Extremely rare large-paper copy with 20 plates printed in counterproof and delicately hand-coloured. 'Ouvrage fort bien éxecuté et qui a été longtemps le meilleur que l'on eût sur cette science' (Brunet). Cours d'hippiatrique is distinguished not only by Lafosse's anatomical skill and knowledge of equitation (gained through both study and practice of the subject), but also by the excellence of its execution: 'Les pl[anches] dessinées par Harguiniez [sic] ... sont finement coloriées et renferment une très grande quantité de fig[ures]: Ce livre est un véritable monument élevé à l'Hippologie. Papier, impression, dessin, gravure, sont également signés' (Mennessier de la Lance).
This copy is quite a lot larger than normal, being some 75mm taller than, for example, the Botfield copy (sold in these rooms, 13 June 2002, lot 170, £28,860), and has very wide margins. Another distinctive difference from other copies is that 20 of the plates are printed in reverse counterproof to produce faint inked lines upon which delicate and refined colour has been applied by a contemporary hand. Brunet III, 765; Cohen-de Ricci col.587; Huth p.46; Mellon Books on Horses and Horsemanship 61; Mennessier de la Lance II, pp.20-21; Nissen ZBI 2360.
Folio (578 x 425mm). Half-title. Engraved frontispiece by B.L. Prevost after Sullier, engraved portrait frontispiece by J. Baptiste Michel after Harguinier, 76 engraved plates in total, with 20 (i.e. 40) in 2 states, uncoloured and in reversed counterproof and delicately hand-coloured, by B. Michel Adam [femme Fessard], F.A. Aveline, C. Baquoy, Benard, Ch. Beulier, L. Bosse, Prevost and others after Harguinier, Lafosse, Saullier, one double-page and folding, 4 folding, 21 double-page and 48 single-page 19, engraved title vignette by and after Prevost, 8 engraved headpieces by Delaunay, Hubert, Levilain, Lucas, Mlle Massard, Mesnil, Michel after Le Carpentier, type-ornament headpieces, woodcut tailpieces and initials (occasional plate tone and ink-soiling extending into margins of a few plates, occasional faint spotting, otherwise, a fresh, clean copy). Early 20th-century morocco preserving contemporary calf covers, gilt edges (calf covers rubbed, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Royal Society of Medicine (stamps [Medical and Chirurgical Society] on half-title and title, [Royal Medical & Chirurgical Society] on verso of half-title, blank recto of portrait, dedication leaf recto, p.1, versos of plates and verso of final text leaf).
