Second French edition of the Le Huen translation, a finely illustrated journal of the pilgrimage to Jerusalem and St. Catherine of Sinai undertaken by Breydenbach. Owned by at least three dukes. In part one, the alphabets and the woodcut of the Church of the Holy are copied from the cuts made by Erhard Reuwich for the first edition (1486; Goff B-1189). The cuts in the second part were printed from blocks made for Simon Vostre, Pierre Le Rouge, and Michel Le Noir. Not in Adams or Mortimer; Alden & Landis 522/4; Fairfax Murray French, 625.
Quarto (230 x 166 mm). Title printed in red and black. 35 woodcut illustrations from 22 blocks. The two folding plates wanting but supplied in expert 19th century facsimile. (A few gatherings in second part with pale dampstain along top, minor stain to B1.) 18th-century French red morocco, spine gilt, all edges gilt. Provenance: partially effaced inscription on colophon dated 1597 – Louis-César de la Baume Le Blanc, duc de La Vallière (1708-1780, library inscription, bound for him) – John Ker, 3rd Duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804, his arms to binding, stamp 2) – Dukes of Devonshire (Chatsworth Library bookplate) – Bruce E. McKinney (his sale, Bloomsbury New York, 3 December 2009, lot 14).
